Purpose
The City of Wolverhampton Regenerating Buildings Preservation
Trust exists to help secure the future of threatened
buildings of architectural or historic merit in the
city and to promote their enjoyment by the public.
Saving Historic Buildings
The Trust is interested in buildings, which are neglected,
decaying or at risk of demolition, especially where
no commercial solution has been found. It focuses
on listed buildings and those in conservation areas,
but is interested in all buildings of architectural
or historic merit.
What the Trust can do
•
Repair or renovate buildings
•
Carry out research and publish useful information
•
Provide advice to owners
•
Enable the public to view and enjoy buildings
•
Work with voluntary organisations, the local authority
and other statutory bodies and facilitate building
restoration
•
Raise funds
Organisation and Funding
The Trust is a private limited company and registered
as a charity. It receives in-kind support from
Wolverhampton City Council as well as technical
and administrative help. The Trust is managed by
an independent Board of Trustees with a wide range
of professional expertise and is run on a day to
day basis by a Trust Administrator, who is answerable
to the Board.
The Trust is one of over 230 registered building
preservation trusts in the UK.
As with most trusts, the City of Wolverhampton Regenerating
Buildings Preservation Trust operates on a revolving
fund basis, i.e. it is funded from the surplus generated
by the sale or lease of restored properties.
The Trust is eligible for feasibility study grants
and low interest loans from the Architectural Heritage
Fund and can apply for Heritage Lottery Funding,
as well as to other public bodies and private trusts.
Effective preservation depends on co-operation between
the Local Authority, voluntary societies, trusts
and building owners. An independent Trust can act
as a “long-stop” to save buildings, which
might otherwise be lost.
It is important to remember that routine maintenance,
at a modest expenditure, can prevent much more expensive
works becoming necessary at a later date.
